Dead bodies found floating: Videos of multiple bodies of alleged COVID-19 victims floating in the Ganga at Chausa village in Bihar’s Mahadeo ghat (bank) have gone viral on social media, causing outrage and shock. Officials who visited the site speculated that the bodies might have floated in from neighbouring districts in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Chausa is located about 10 kilometres from the headquarters of the border district of Buxar, which borders eastern Uttar Pradesh.

On Monday morning, the villagers discovered many bodies floating along the river’s bank and notified local authorities. “There are nearly 30-40 dead bodies in the Ganga, and there are wild dogs running about. Yes, the majority of them are likely to be COVID-19 victims,” said social activist and local lawyer Ashwini Varma .

Local authorities who visited the village, on the other hand, reported seeing “some 10-12 dead bodies floating in the river water.” Although admitting that the majority of the bodies may have been COVID victims, officials said that “they could have floated in from neighbouring districts of U.P.”

The corpses are bloated. They seem to have been submerged for at least 5-7 days. It needs to be looked at from where they’ve come. They may be from Varanasi or Allahabad,” said K.K. Upadhayay, a senior district official.

According to the Chausa villagers, “the local officials arrived, inspected the place, looked at the floating bodies from the river bank, and then left.”

The villagers demanded the deployment of officials at cremation grounds to deter people from throwing bodies into the water. They also demanded that firewood rates be held in check so that families can practise their last rites correctly and are not forced to dispose bodies.

The villagers are still concerned about the transmission of the COVID-19 virus across these bodies: “Stray dogs are devouring bodies that may be COVID victims.” It will disperse the virus among the villagers,” fearful villagers add.
