He mentioned that patients would be given Ivermectin 12 mg for five days because expert panels from the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, and Japan discovered a statistically important reduction in mortality, time to recovery, and viral clearance in COVID-19 patients treated with this drug.

The minister said this treatment would not prevent COVID-19 infection but it can help reduce the severity.

“The Ivermectin 12 mg tablet will be made available in all districts, sub-districts, PHCs, CHCs, sub-health centres, and rural pharmacies for people to collect and begin care immediately, regardless of any signs or something,” Rane said.

What is Ivermectin?

Ivermectin is an oral parasitic infection treatment. The medicine has been in use since the 1980s and is mostly used in head lice creams and lotions. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved ivermectin tablets for the treatment of intestinal strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis (river blindness). It’s even used to get rid of scabies.

What does health ministry say about Ivermectin?

The Health Ministry recommended Ivermectin tablets (200 mcg/kg once a day, to be taken on an empty stomach) for 3 to 5 days if fever is not managed in its updated guidelines for home isolation of mild and asymptomatic Covid-19 cases.

In a press conference, AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria said, “People with mild illness do not need medicine; based on limited evidence, one can take it but not excessively.

With the vaccine scheme for the 18-44 age group already in the works in Goa, the government has agreed to provide Ivermectin to all adults above the age of 18 in order to reduce mortality. Vishwajit Rane, the health minister, said that those above the age of 18 will be given Ivermectin 12 mg for five days.

“However, this does not preclude Covid-19 infection but does help to reduce the incidence of the disease at the same time one should not have a fake sense of security.”

“There have been articles published in therapeutic journals. Studies in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Germany have shown that when this (Ivermectin) is administered ahead of time, when the whole population is administered this drug, the mortality rate falls and the effects of Covid-19 on that person are also reduced “
